Prayagraj: Students enrolled in the department of psychology at Allahabad University would be studying different fields of psychology from the coming academic session.
Following the guidelines of the New Education Policy (NEP)-2020 and implementing a four year undergraduate programme, the department has proposed to introduce and impart teaching in sports psychology, organisational psychology, media psychology, forensic psychology, consumer psychology, health psychology, environmental psychology.
The department has prepared a four year undergraduate course in this connection whereas earlier students used to study health and environmental psychology in post graduation. Over a dozen faculty members have been engaged by the department.
Students will be taught about organisational psychology, in which students will be informed as to what causes stress during work. Under what circumstances one is satisfied or dissatisfied with one’s work, etc. Along with this, under the topic of health psychology, they will also be taught as to how much effect psychology has on health and how both are interrelated. Under the portion of the proposed curriculum, students would have a paper on environmental psychology which will analyse the relationship between environment and psychology. Associate professor in the department, Sandeep Anand, said that under consumer psychology, students would be taught about the psychology of the customer. Likewise, media psychology will teach how social media affects the mood of the community. Students will also be taught as to how rumours affect one’s mood. Under forensic psychology, students would be taught about criminal attitudes, what causes a person to become a criminal, what is his psychology and how can he be prevented from becoming a criminal.
Anand informed TOI that in the first-year of the four-year programme, certificate programme would be taught to those study only for the first year, diploma to those of two-year, bachelor’s degree for the three-year and for the students completing the fourth year of the graduate programme, a honours degree will be provided. In the second, third and fourth years, students will be taught about sports psychology, media psychology, forensic psychology, consumer psychology, health psychology, environmental psychology, etc. The proposals would be sent to the Academic Council of AU and after getting its approval, the same would be passed by the Executive Council before being implemented.
