Even in the four states/UTs where cases rose in the week gone by (August 16-22) — Haryana, Goa, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands — the total tallies were too low for the rise to be significant.
The most significant decline took place in Kerala, which recorded a 10% fall in infections. The state currently accounts for over half of all cases reported in the country, with 1.24 lakh fresh infections registered last week out of the national tally of 2.2 lakh. In the previous week, Kerala had reported 1.37 lakh cases.
Maharashtra, which continues to log the second highest number of fresh Covid cases after Kerala, reported a steep 19% drop in infections during the week.
Among other states that continue to report high Covid numbers, Karnataka logged a 16% decline, Andhra Pradesh 24%, Odisha 15% and Tamil Nadu 10%.
Even Himachal Pradesh showed a decline of 29% last week. States in the northeast too continued to report falling numbers.
