New Delhi: The government on Thursday confirmed two cases of Omicron variant of the dreaded Coronavirus have been detected in India. As per the Union Health Ministry, both positive patients were reported from Karnataka. The patients have been identified as 46-year-old and 66-year-old males.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) told news agency ANI on December 2, as many as two secondary contacts and three primary contacts of a 46-year-old male tested positive for Omicron variant of Covid-19 and their samples for genome sequencing have been sent.
“As many as 13 primary contacts and 205 secondary contacts of the 46-year-old male were tested. Out of which, three primary contacts and two secondary contacts were tested positive between November 22 and 25. All are isolated. Their samples have been sent for genome sequencing, results are awaited,” it said.
Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar told ANI, India’s first Omicron patient, a 66-year-old South African national, left India after testing negative but before genome sequencing results were known. Another person who tested positive for Covid-19’s Omicron variant, a 46-year-old doctor, doesn’t have any travel history.
“Out of his (doctor’s) primary & secondary contact, 5 people tested positive for COVID-19. So a total of 6 people have been isolated, admitted to govt hospital. None of them showing any serious symptoms. All these people are fully vaccinated,” Minister K Sudhakar told ANI.
“The person who has left for South Africa via Dubai had presented a negative certificate for the virus, from a private lab. His primary & secondary contacts (total 264) were found negative. So it means to say that his certificate may be true,” he added.
Covid-19’s Omicron variant was 1st reported by WHO from South Africa on November 25
On 24th November, the World Health Organization (WHO) had informed about the new variant Omicron in South Africa.
