NEW DELHI: Equity indices started Samvat 2078 on a positive note on Thursday with both the sensex and Nifty registering gains across all sectors.
The 30-share BSE sensex jumped 296 points or 0.49 per cent to close at 60,068; while the broader NSE Nifty rose 88 points or 0.49 per cent to settle at 17,917.
Markets conduct a special one-hour muhurat trading session every year on Diwali to mark the beginning of the new Hindu calendar year.
It is believed that muhurat trading brings prosperity and wealth throughout the year.
Top gainers in the sensex pack included M&M, ITC, Bajaj Auto, L&T, Kotak Bank and Sun Pharma with their shares rising as much as 3.13 per cent.
While ICICI Bank, Ultra Cemco, Asian Paints and Dr Reddy’s were the only laggards falling up to 0.69 per cent.
On the NSE platform, all sub-indices finished in green with Nifty Media, PSU Bank and Auto gaining as much as 1.48 per cent.
Both the indices closed Hindu calendar year Samvat 2077 with stellar gains. The sensex rallied 16,133.94 points or 36.97 per cent, while the Nifty soared 5,048.95 points or 39.50 per cent.
Investors on Dalal Street were richer by about Rs 99 lakh crore during the last one year, riding on strong across the-board buying.
The rise was the best in the last 12 years while the gain in investors’ wealth—in terms of BSE’s market capitalisation—was the best ever, official data showed.
Domestic indices will remain closed on Friday (November 5) for Diwali Balipratipada.
