On April 12, deputy minister of Information and Communications Pham Duc Long had a meeting with ST Liew, vice president of Qualcomm Technologies Inc. and president of the company’s business in Taiwan and Southeast Asia, and Thieu Phuong Nam, country director for Qualcomm in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia to discuss future cooperation on 5G and 6G technology.

During the event, Long gave a general overview of Vietnam’s digital transformation, with a focus on the development of the digital economy. To accelerate the national digital transformation process, infrastructure plays a vital role, including the rollout of 5G and associated data centres.

At present, officials are working on a law for the digital technology industry to accelerate the development of a sustainable digital economy with an aim to enable revenue from digital infrastructure, including cloud computing, to make up about 1 per cent of GDP by 2025. Over the next two years, 5G will cover 95 per cent of the population.

Qualcomm is now a leader in 5G technology and is cooperating with mobile network operators in the country to pilot 5G in 16 cities and provinces and to develop smart cities.

The deputy minister asked Qualcomm to share its experience with the deployment of 5G standalone, mmWave technology, and research of 6G.

As planned, prime minister Pham Minh Chinh will visit the US to attend the US-Asean summit in May or June. He proposes preparations for the signing of an MoU between the MIC and Qualcomm as part of the visit. Liew has confirmed that Qualcomm is willing to cooperate with the MIC as proposed by Long.
