The Chinese government aims for renewable energy to generate a third of the country’s electric power by 2025, up from 28.8% in 2020, according to the newly released 14th Five-Year Plan (2021 to 2025) for renewables. The plan aims to reduce emissions and take the lead in battling climate change. Non-fossil fuels accounted for 15.4% of total primary energy consumption in 2020, and Beijing has pledged to boost that share to 25% by 2030, by which point the country hopes to have achieved peak carbon emissions.
