AS HEAVY rainfall continued in parts of the state on Tuesday, crop loss was reported from different parts of Uttar Pradesh. The most affected districts were Bahraich, Banda, Barabanki, Sultanpur, Gonda and Shravasti, where more than 30 mm rainfall was reported.

Even as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a survey to assess the extent of crop loss, experts say that the maximum loss is estimated of the ’till’ (sesame) crop, as it was near harvest, and of Arhar crop in some areas. In areas such as Moradabad, loss of vegetable crop was also reported following constant rain leading to fields filled with water.

“Due to the heavy rain, we estimate maximum damage to the farmers of ’till’ crop in the areas like Bundelkhand or other parts of the state as this crop was near harvest and this rainfall has brought damage to the same. Arhar or vegetable crops might be affected in some areas but not to a large extent, like ’till’.

As for rice, we expect that this rainfall would ensure better harvest as moisture is going to be retained,” said Sanjay Singh, director, Uttar Pradesh Council of Agriculture Research.

Meanwhile, following instructions from the Chief Minister, Moradabad District Magistrate Manvendra Singh visited the affected fields and formed teams in coordination with agriculture department officials to ascertain the loss.

“A team has been formed to conduct a survey along with the agriculture department to ascertain the damage. If any individual approaches us with the request for a claim then we would get the survey conducted in 72 hours as well and initiate the process of compensation.”
