NEW DELHI: Marking another milestone in the steady retreat of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, daily cases reported from across India dipped below the 1,000 mark on Sunday for the first time in 716 days.
While the country recorded 999 fresh cases on Sunday, Monday’s tally too is expected to remain well below the 1,000 mark, as per TOI’s Covid database collated from numbers released by states and UTs. India had last recorded a three-figure daily case tally nearly two years ago, when 922 infections were logged on April 17, 2020. Since then, the pandemic has seen three major waves in the country.
Fresh Covid cases have been declining consistently for more than 10 weeks now, after the third wave peaked in the January 17-23 week.
Last week (March 28-April 3), just over 8,400 new cases were logged in the country, the lowest weekly number since April 13-19, 2020.
In other indices too, the pandemic at present is at levels last seen two years ago, during the initial weeks of the spread of the coronavirus in the country. For instance, 80 new Covid deaths were reported in India last week, the lowest weekly toll from the virus since March 23-29, 2020, the first week of the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the pandemic.
There were just around 12,000 recorded active cases of the infection in the country by Monday night, the lowest count since April 17, 2020.
While Kerala continues to report the highest number of cases in the country, the state’ tally too has been falling rapidly. On Monday, Kerala recorded 256 fresh cases, its lowest daily tally since July 6, 2020. For the first time in many months, Kerala on Monday reported no new deaths either during the last 24 hours or in the past few days.
